Hi! I’m Ana Gauthier and I’m a Registered Nurse who specializes in maternal-child health. I’ve been caring for mothers and children for over 20 years. In more recent years, I’ve focused on a part of child-rearing that has always come naturally to me—potty training toddlers.
One of the great things about my content is that I offer it all for free. Teaching parents about potty training has become a hobby and a creative outlet for me. It’s my way of giving back and supporting families through an important milestone. That alone is reason enough to keep going, so welcome.
Here you’ll find a free, downloadable PowerPoint presentation that I’ve shared with many families over the years. It’s one of the best ways to begin the potty-training journey because it builds the skill from the foundation up. Today I want to share it with you.
There is so much to learn about this exciting milestone and we’re going to make your journey a great one. Just like any life experience, each family’s story will be different. I’ll share ideas and strategies that have worked overtime and have helped many families. Still, every child is unique. You may need to tweak certain things and that’s okay. In fact, I encourage it. I’d love for you to share your experience with me and with other parents on my social pages. We can all learn from each other. It truly takes a village.
Speaking of villages, my teachings are rooted in research and years of experience, but they are also deeply shaped by my culture and upbringing. I grew up in a small village in Puerto Rico surrounded by parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, and more cousins than I could count. I started learning about potty training as a child.
In the community where I was raised, children were expected to learn basic life skills early. What the neighbors thought mattered to families, and as soon as a baby could sit up and interact, it was time to start teaching. One of my grandmother’s favorite sayings was “A los niños se les enseña temprano,” which means “Children need to be taught early.” We even learned how to drive vehicles when we were kids, and we drove pretty well, too.
I like to remind parents that when you start early, you can take your time—and often finish early as a bonus. Teaching early and gradually leads to early mastery with fewer struggles. This approach can work for any lifestyle and any age group, which is especially helpful in today’s busy world.
I also want to be clear that while I’m a nurse, a mother of five, a wife, a friend, a patient advocate, and an educator, I am not a doctor. I can offer sound and supportive advice, but I cannot diagnose or treat your child. If you believe your child needs medical care, please reach out to your healthcare provider.
I plan to continue growing and sharing my work through EL Potty. My vision is to make it a one-stop shop for all your potty-training needs. Thank you for trusting in my work and for allowing me to be part of your parenting journey.
With gratitude
Ana Gauthier RN, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM
